ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਲੱਖ ਵਾਰੀ (ਭੀ) (ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਨਾਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ) ਸੁੱਚ ਰੱਖਾਂ, (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸੁੱਚ ਰੱਖਣ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਸੁੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ ।
By thinking, He cannot be reduced to thought, even by thinking hundreds of thousands of times.
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ (ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ) ਇਕ-ਤਾਰ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਾਂ; (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ।
By remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained, even by remaining lovingly absorbed deep within.
(ਜੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤਾਂ ਨਿਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ
The body does not obtain purity without loving devotion to the Lord.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਦਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੮।੯।
O Nanak, never forget the Naam; the Guru shall unite us with the Creator. ||8||9||
(ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਤ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਦਾ) (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰੇ,
You may practice cleansing day and night,
(ਫੇਰ ਭੀ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਧੋਤਿਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ।
but the filth of your mind shall not leave your body.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਲੋਕ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਤੇ, ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਭੌਂ ਕੇ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
Even if one takes cleansing baths at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and wanders over the whole planet,
ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਹੋਰ ਭੀ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਪਰ, ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
and performs all the rituals of purification day and night, still, without the True Guru, there is only darkness. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਗਿਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਉਲਝ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they putrefy and die, O Siblings of Destiny; their numbers cannot be counted.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ । ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੀ (ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈ) ।
Without Truth, purity cannot be achieved, O Siblings of Destiny; the Lord is true and unfathomable.
ਹੇ ਸਰਦਾਰ! ਹੇ ਸਿਆਣੇ! ਹੇ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਦਿਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਹੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਸ਼ਾਹ!
Think of the Lord in your mind, O wise one.
ਹੇ ਬੰਦਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਛੁਡਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ! ਤੇਰੀ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Enshrine love for the True Lord in your mind and body; He is the Liberator from bondage. ||1||Pause||
ਪਤੀ-ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ ਕਿਸ ਅਰਥ? ਉੱਚੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਸੰਜਮ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਲਾਭ? ਜੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕ-ਥੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਜਨੇਊ ਕੀਹ ਸੰਵਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ?
Worship without faith; self-discipline without truthfulness; the ritual of the sacred thread without chastity - what good are these?
ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ, (ਸਰੀਰ ਮਲ ਮਲ ਕੇ) ਧੋਂਦੇ ਹੋ, (ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ) ਤਿਲਕ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹੋ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਮ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹੋ), ਪਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਆਚਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਬਾਹਰਲੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਕੋਈ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੀ । (ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਭੁਲੇਖਾ ਭੀ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਹੀ ਹੈ) ।੬।
You may bathe and wash, and apply a ritualistic tilak mark to your forehead, but without inner purity, there is no understanding. ||6||
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਸੁੱਚਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ (ਤੀਰਥ-) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ।
His mind is not pure, so what is the use of performing ritual cleansings?
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕੱਠ (ਗ਼ਲਤ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਲ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਠਹਿਰਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।੫
He carries the karma of his own past actions; who else can he blame? ||5||
ਕਈ ਸੁੱਚਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
and purify your mind in various ways,
(ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ । ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹੁ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
but none of this is equal to the Lord's Name. Remain attached to the Lord's Lotus Feet. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਵਰਤ, ਸੰਧਿਆ, ਸਰੀਰਕ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ
You may observe fasts, and say your prayers, purify yourself
(ਤੀਰਥ-ਜਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਲਈ) ਚਾਰ ਕੂਟਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਭੌਂਦੇ ਫਿਰਨਾ,
and do good deeds; you may go on pilgrimages everywhere and eat nothing at all.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਬੜੀ ਸੁੱਚ ਨਾਲ ਰਸੋਈ ਸੁਥਰੀ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
I have prepared all sorts of foods in various ways, and all sorts of sweet deserts.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੀ ਰਸੋਈ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਹੁਣ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਕਰ ।੨।
I have made my kitchen pure and sacred. Now, O my Sovereign Lord King, please sample my food. ||2||
